What The Bible Says About Giving

Genesis 3 3-5

Cain gave an offering. Abel gave the first fruits and the best parts as an offering "The Lord was pleased with Abel and his offering."

Genesis 14:18-20

When Abram came back from a victory and met the King Meichizedek, he (Abram) irnrnediately gave a tenth of his spoils This is the first example of a tither.

All Things Do Belong to the Lord...

Psalm 24:1 The earth belongs to God! Everything in the world is His!"

Haggai 2:8 "The silver is mine and the gold is mine."

Leviticus 27:30-32 "A tenth of the produce of the land, whether grain or fruit, is the Lord's and is holy.. And the Lord owns the tenth animal of your herds and flocks and other domestic animals.

No More "Laws Rules" About Giving...

2 Corin 9:6-8 (2 Cor 9:6-8 NRSV) "The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. (7 } Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not. reluctantly or under compulsion5 for God loves a cheerful giver. (8) And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work."

A Great Spiritual Truth...

Proverbs 11:24 "(.Prov 11:24 NRSV) Some give freely, yet grow all the richer; others withhold what is due, and only suffer want."

Matthew 25:29 "(Mat 25:29 NRSV) For to all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away."

Luke 6:38 "(Luke 6:38 NRSV) give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back."

Malachi 3:8-10, "(Mal 3:8-10 NRSV) Will anyone rob God? Yet you are robbmg me! But you say, "Why are we robbing you?" ln your tithes and offerings!

(9) You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me--the whole nation of you!

(10) Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in my house, and thus put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts; see if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing."

I Timothy 6:17-19, "(1 Tim 6:7-~9 NRSV) As for those who in the present age are rich, command them not to be haughty, or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but rather on God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. {18) They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share, (19) thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundatioit for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that really is life."

Proverbs 3:9-10, "(Prov 3:9-10 NRSV) Honor the LORD with your substance and with the first fruits of your produce;  then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine.

I Corinth 6:l, (l Cor 16:1 NRSV) Now concerning the collection for the saints: you should follow the directions I gave to the churches of Galatia. On the first day of every week, each of you is to put aside and save whatever extra you earn, so that collecn.'ons need not be taken when I come."

Deut 8:18, "(Deu 8:18 NRSV) But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, so that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your ancestors, as be is doing today."

Other Christian Resources:Christian Radio, 3:30 p.m.-4 p.m.Larry Burkell, " You can learn a lot about a person's faith not from their words but by reading their checkbook. There in writing you will really see what is most important to people."

The Challenge (if you like a challenge)

Try giving at least 10% of your earnings, whether net or gross, for six months beginning today or tomorrow. That would include bonuses, dividends, earnings, whatever. Check your progress after 6 months and see if God has proven himself strong for you. If you feel you cannot begin here with this challenge, then please begin here...Repeat three times:

(each week)

  • All that I have is a gift from God.

  • What I do with it is MY gift back to God.

  • God deserves my first fruits as my offering.

  • I will ask God to stretch me in giving.

  • To withhold from God is to rob God.
